Founding of Club
The Kiwanis Club of Ocala was chartered in 1924. It met initially at the Ocala House Hotel on the east side of the square (current site of the Chamber of Commerce). It later moved to the Marion Hotel (currently the multi-floor Ocala National Bank building). Then it moved to the Brahma restaurant on south US Hiway's 441, 301, 27.After many years there, the Brahma was slated for destruction so in 1977, the Club moved to the Silver Springs Holiday Inn where it met for 26 years. On February 7, 2003, the club moved to Carmichaels Restaurant at 3105 E. Silver Springs Blvd. In 2005 the club moved to its present location at the Elk's Club on NE 25th Ave, The club began with just 16 members and has grown to its current membership of 104 . Over the years, the club has held many fundraisers, including pancake breakfasts, Golf Tournaments and other events. We help out in the community in a variety of ways, including sponsoring youth groups, raising money to benefit children and children’s support groups, and providing scholarships. Our primary Community service since 1948 has been to provide a camping experierience for the communities youth, uncluding underpriveledged youth who go to camp on scholarships. We have owned Camp Kiwanis in the Ocala National Forest on land leased from the forest service, since 1948. The club has enjoyed a rich history over the years, with its members coming from fields like banking. financial management, accounting, civil service, education, management, and many more.
